Improving on our skill-set

Most employed people seek to improve their opportunities and increase their income, and one of the best ways to go about this is by improving on their skill-set. Improving on your skill-set means that you will have more to offer potential employers and as such, making you negotiate a better compensation package.

The mistake that many do is that after getting their initial certification, whether from college or university, they tend to stop trying to improve on themselves. This leaves them in a situation where their careers do not progress the way they should and this can hinder future income opportunities and the ability to get better jobs. This does not have to be so as many ways are available to improve one’s skill-sets that do not require a great deal of time, effort, or money. Some of these are as follows:

Learn a language

Besides the organisation they work with, many people are limited in their careers by geographic location. One of the reasons for that is the language barrier. If a person is multilingual, they will likely have better opportunities to go abroad for further study, conferences, and work opportunities. These can be significant steps in boosting their career in the long run to help them get more jobs.

As a means of improving your career, consider taking online language courses with a resource like e-Careers and adding another skill to your resume. Most times, learning another language does not have to be a full-time task. It can be done after work, on the weekends, or during holidays. Take a short course

Most times, when people think of improving on their professional certification, they think of going back to school to get another degree, but this does not have to be so as many options are available such as taking short courses that give certifications in various aspects of different professions. This could also be a chance for you to specialise and explore a particular segment of the industry without having to commit to several years for a degree. If you want to improve your skills, consider taking short courses on various aspects within and outside the industry to expose yourself to potential new opportunities.

Attend Conferences

Conferences can be extremely beneficial for any employee because they not only give the chance to travel to new places but also allow for many networking opportunities that could lead to jobs, partnerships, and so on. Each quarter or so, conduct research about the upcoming conferences within your niche and determine those that you can attend. If these conferences allow for exhibitions or presentations, find a way to get involved as this can help boost your profile within your industry and potentially get you seen. While there, make sure to gain as many contacts and connections within your industry as possible as it may come in handy both now and in the future.

Improving your skill-set within your industry is not a very difficult task but it requires conscious effort. Follow the above steps to get started on improving your skill-set.
