Roedean School is a thriving all-girls private school in Brighton. Whether students board or attend in the day only, Roedean’s vibrant community is a home away from home for girls from the local area, across the UK, and overseas.
During a typical school day, students enjoy various extra-curricular opportunities alongside their academic studies. Girls can take part in comprehensive sport, music and performing and visual art programmes, together with a choice of 130 co-curricular activities, charity work projects, and house competitions and events.
House Spirit at Roedean School
House teams are a core part of life at Roedean. The School has four houses, and every boarding and day student joins one of the house teams.
Girls compete in a range of weekly competitions in the hopes that their house will emerge as the winner at the end of each term. Roedean hosts many fun inter-house events in which every student has the chance to display her talents in areas like:
- Science and problem-solving.
- Sports, such as football, basketball, dodgeball, badminton, and cross-country.
- Dance
- Art
Each house has its own mascot and colour, and students dress up in these colours to represent their house during competitive events. This tradition highlights Roedean’s house spirit and strengthens the School community. As students take part in house events each term, they reinforce school sisterhood and friendships.
Roedean Students’ Charity Work
Roedean prides itself on its girls’ community-mindedness, and students often take part in projects to raise money for charity. The Roedean community has raised a record-breaking £39,021 over the 2022/23 academic year for various causes. Roedean has thanked everyone in the School community who has contributed to the fundraising efforts.
The School believes philanthropy helps girls develop a sense of social responsibility, generosity of spirit, and respect for others. By nurturing compassion, Roedean encourages students to become helpful, globally minded citizens. A few of the projects that have been undertaken over the past academic year are listed below:
Tea For Blind Veterans
In May 2023, Year 8 students and the Year 12 Community Action Programme (CAP) group hosted a tea party in support of the UK charity Blind Veterans. The event featured talks and musical performances from Roedean students.
Roedean works with Blind Veterans regularly: The CAP group visits a Blind Veterans centre on Wednesday afternoons, and Year 8 raised £3,000 for the charity during the 2022/23 academic year.
Project 125 Moldova
June 7 was a non-uniform day for Roedean, and the School asked students to attend wearing the colours of Moldova or Ukraine. Girls from Years 11 and 12 then travelled to Moldova for a week in July to teach English to Ukrainian refugee children. Students wore blue, red, and yellow on the non-uniform day to raise funds for this project.
Sleep-Out for Off The Fence
On June 15, 50 Year 10 students took part in a “sleep-out” to raise money for Off The Fence. The Brighton-based charity empowers people experiencing homelessness. The money raised will help fund sleeping bags for Off The Fence to distribute.
Charity Abseil
On June 23, Year 7 students will abseil down Peacehaven Cliffs in East Sussex to raise money for Rockinghorse, the year group’s dedicated charity. Rockinghorse is a children’s charity in Brighton that supports sick infants, children, and young people across Sussex.
Boarding at Roedean School
More than 330 boarders enjoy weekend activities at Roedean. Students who board at the private school in Brighton have opportunities to make new friends and gain new experiences. One Year 9 student has compared boarding at Roedean to living with friends.
Many students are full boarders, though the School also offers weekly and flexi-boarding options. Students with families who live in London, Sussex, or Surrey often choose weekly boarding.
Flexi-boarding allows students to stay at the School for three nights a week. Girls who flexi-board can choose to stay over the weekend, too, if there’s an activity they want to take part in.
The multicultural aspect of the School’s boarding community is a unique feature of Roedean. Boarders of all ages and from all backgrounds enjoy being part of a community with diverse nationalities.
